Realising That Data Is Everywhere

 

Before starting my apprenticeship, I mostly thought of data as reports, spreadsheets, dashboards, and graphs. The sort of thing you see in meetings while somebody says the phrase “key metrics” with great seriousness, as though discussing military intelligence during wartime.

 

What I’m slowly beginning to realise is that data is not just something businesses use. It is woven into modern life so completely that most of us barely notice it anymore. In fact, data quietly shapes huge parts of our day long before we ever encounter a spreadsheet in the wild.

Some examples are obvious. When your phone suggests the fastest route home, when Netflix somehow knows you’re emotionally vulnerable enough to watch a three-hour documentary about a failed music festival, or when your bank flags suspicious spending because you briefly behaved unlike yourself and bought a salad. But some forms of data are far less visible.

 

Data influences which news stories appear in front of us, which adverts follow us around the internet like needy ghosts, how supermarkets decide what products to stock, how traffic lights are timed, how hospitals plan services, and even how weather forecasts improve over time. It affects what we see, what we buy, where we travel, and increasingly, how decisions are made around us. And most of the time, we barely notice it happening. That’s the part I find fascinating.

 

Before starting my apprenticeship, I viewed data mostly as historical information. Something collected to explain what had already happened. But I’m starting to understand that data is often used more like a prediction engine. Organisations, governments, apps, and services all use data patterns to anticipate behaviour, identify risks, and make decisions before problems fully appear.

Your music app predicts what you might want to hear next. Online shops predict what you might buy next. Your phone predicts where you might be going before you even type it in. Which is either impressively convenient or mildly unsettling depending on your mood that day.

 

The strange thing is that data itself is not really the important part. Numbers alone are meaningless. What matters is interpretation. Humans look for patterns in data because we are constantly trying to understand the world around us. In many ways, data is simply another way of telling stories about behaviour, choices, habits, movement, and change over time and that has completely changed how I think about the subject.

 

I used to imagine ‘working with data’ as something highly technical and detached from ordinary life. Now I’m beginning to see that data is often just a structured reflection of human behaviour. Every click, journey, purchase, vote, search, delay, queue, complaint, or preference leaves some kind of informational footprint behind. Modern life produces data constantly. We create it almost accidentally. Sometimes voluntarily. Sometimes not so. And yet, despite living in what is probably the most data-driven period in human history, many people, including me until recently, rarely stop to think about how much of daily life quietly depends upon it.

 

Even very ordinary routines involve invisible layers of data processing. Using a contactless card on the train, ordering food online, streaming music, checking traffic, browsing social media, visiting the doctor, receiving targeted adverts, or simply unlocking your phone with your face all involve systems collecting, interpreting, and responding to information. It’s rather extraordinary when you think about it for too long, which is perhaps why most of us wisely don’t.

 

One thing I’ve found particularly interesting is that data also reflects human imperfections surprisingly well. Systems can only work with the information they receive, and humans are exceptionally creative at producing messy information. Somebody types their date of birth incorrectly. Somebody leaves a field blank. Somebody uploads the wrong file version. Somewhere, right now, there is almost certainly an Excel spreadsheet called: FINAL_v2_UPDATED_USETHISONE_NEW.xlsx. Humanity remains beautifully consistent.

 

As I continue my apprenticeship, I want to better understand not only how data works technically, but also how it shapes behaviour, influences decisions, and quietly structures modern life in ways most people never really see. 

 

The more I learn, the more I suspect that data is not really about numbers at all. It’s about people. The numbers are simply the footprints we leave behind.
