Welcome to The Data Analyst's Apprentice

Data is everywhere.

It decides what appears on your social media feed, how traffic flows through cities, which films get recommended to you, how businesses make decisions, and sometimes whether your bank becomes suspicious because you bought a sandwich in a town you don’t normally visit.

Most of us interact with data every single day without really thinking about it. It sits quietly in the background of modern life, shaping systems, services, decisions, and behaviour in ways that are often invisible until something goes wrong. This blog is a space to explore that world.

The Data Analyst's Apprentice follows my journey through a data technician apprenticeship as I learn more about how data works, how organisations use it, and how it influences ordinary life far beyond spreadsheets and dashboards. Along the way, I’ll be writing about:

  • The apprenticeship process and the EPA angst
  • everyday examples of data in action,
  • technology and digital systems,
  • user behaviour and trends,
  • automation and workflows,
  • the strange realities of modern information systems,
  • and the surprisingly human side of data.

This isn’t a blog written from the perspective of an expert pretending to have all the answers. It’s about learning in public, asking questions, making connections, and trying to understand the systems quietly shaping the world around us.

The more I learn about data, the more I realise it’s not really about numbers at all. It’s about people.
